Leaves are alternate, gathered at the ends branchlets.

Flowers in May.

Pseudocarps ripen in August or September to pale red or pale purple.

It is planted as street and shade trees.

The wood is used for turnery, barrels and utensils, besides for fuel.

Distribution ; Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Ryukyu, Formosa, China
