A medium-sized evergreen tree with brownish gray smooth bark,

Leaves are alternate, pendulous, thin-coriaccous, long acuminate at the apex, acuminate at the base. entire, deep green and lustrous above, somewhat glaucous and puberulent beneath.

Flowers in August.

Berries ripening blackish purple in June of next year.

This tree is endemic to the warm temperate zone of southern Japan.

The wood, rather hard, is used for flooring, implements.

Distribution ; Central Honshu (Chiba to west), Izu Islands, Shikoku, Kyushu, Ryukyu
