Leaves are alternate, obovate, simply serrulate with acute teeth ending in a gland.

Petioles are pubescent with a pair of glands at the apex or near the base.

Flowers open inMarch to April before the unfolding of leaves.

This tree is scatteredly found in mountains of the cool or warm temperatezone.

The wood is used for buildings, furnitures, instruments,printing blocks. It is planted for an ornamental tree.

Distribution ; Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu
