A large deciduous tree with grey fissured bark.

Leaves are opposite, ovate to pentagonal, shallowly 3-lobed, irregularly serrate, glaucous beneath.

Petioles are 2-9 cm long.

Red flowers open in April before leaves.

It grows on moist and swampy limited places in the warm to the cool temperate zone.

It is planted for garden trees. Extraction from the leaves and bark is for eye medicine.
