Leaves are alternate, coriaceous, narrowly elliptical to oblong lanceolate, caudately acuminate at the apex, undulately toothed with glandular tips, deep green above, pale green beneath.
Flowers in august to September.
Fruits maturing dark purple in November of next year, drupe-like, globoid, with persistent calyx-lobes at the apex.
This tree ranges from southern Japan to Formosa and continental China.
The wood, light and soft, is only used for low-grade timber.
