A deciduous shrub with dark grey bark. The bark is dispersed with lenticels.

Leaves are alternate, ovovate, abruptly acute at the apex, entire on the margin.

They are deep green and lustrous above, paler beneath, dispersed with pellucid dots, shedding pungent odor.

Greenish flowers open in April to May on the branchlets of the previous year.

This is the monotypic genus and grows in the vallys in the cool to warm temperate zone and the decoction of leaves is used as an insectcide.

The wood is used for small wares. The leaves are for making a compost.

Distribution ; Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, South Korea, China
