Leaves are decussately opposite, palmately 3-nerved with a midrib pinnately veined, lateral veins 6-8 pairs, terminating into the serrations, venation prominent beneath.
Flowers in May to July after the leaves.
Fruits maturing scarlet to dark brown in October.
This maple is endemic to Japan, growing in swampy forests.
The wood, somewhat hard and heavy, is used for boxes and turneries.
