A midium sized deciduous tree with grey and smooth bark.

Leaves are alternate, sharply serrate, with 15-24 pairs of straight lateral veins impressed above.

Flowers in May with leaves.

This tree is common along the steams in the the cool temperate zone and the upper part of the warm temperate region.

The wood is used for utensils, furniture, fuels.

Distribution ; Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu
