Ternstroemia japonica


A medium sized evergreen tree with dark grey smooth fissured bark.

Leaves are alternate, thick coriaceous, entire on the margin, rounded at the apex, deepgreen and lustrous above, yellowish green beneath.

Petioles are glabrous, reddish, sulcate above.

Yellowish white flowers open solitary in the axils of new shoots in July.

It is widely distributed in the warm temperate to the subtropical zone.

The wood is used for alcove posts, combs, turneries, fuels. It is planted for garden trees and windbreak woods.
