Leaves are opposite, obovate to narrowly obovate, elliptic or ovate, abruptly acute at the apex, rounded or broadly cuneate at the base, entire and ciliate on the margin.
Flowers open in April to May, solitary or in pairs, pendulous from the leaf-axils of the lower part of new shoots.
Berries maturing red in June to July. ellipsoidal, edible.
This shrub is found on hills and mountains in the cool-temperate zone.
It is planted in gardens.
