Lyonia elliptica


A deciduos small tree with pale greyish brown fissured bark. The bark is conspicuously twisted in old trees.

Leaves are alternate, broadly ovate, abruptly acuminate at the apex, entire on the margin, green and lustrous above, pale green and pilose beneath.

White tubular urceolate flowers open in axillary racemes on the annotinous shoots in June to July.

This tree is common on ridges of the warm temperate zone to the lower part of the cool temperate zone.

The wood is used for utensils, toys, combs.

Distribution ; Honshu, Shikpku, Kyushu
