A large deciduous tree with dark grey or greyish brown smooth bark.

Leaves are decussately opposite, chartaceous, double serrulate, palmately 9-11 lobed.

Petioles are 3-8 cm long, dilated at the base enclosing a bud.

It grows in the cool temperate to the subalpine zone.

The wood is used for utensils, carvings, boxes. It is planted for garden trees and bonsai.
