Rinboku
Prunus spinulosa


An evergreen medium sized tree with greyish brown smooth, horizontally grained bark resembling to cherry.

Leaves are alternative, coriaceous. The margin is nearly entire in old tree, but in young it is aristately serrate.

Small white flowers open in September to October in axillary racemes.

The tree is endemic in the warmer part of Japan and found in gloomy valley.

The wood is used for utensils, fuels. The bark yields reddish brown dye.

Distribution ; Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu
