A deciduous shrub with dark greyish fissured bark.

Leaves are alternate, obovate, abruptly short-acuminate at the apex, dull and scatteredly pilose above.

White flowers open densely in May to June. Drupes ripen to blue in October.

This tree is widely found at wetty places in the warm to cool temperate zone.

The wood is used for handles of utensils, seals. It is planted for garden trees.

Distribution ; Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Korea, Manchuria, China, Himalaya, Philippine
