A small deciduous tree with grey and smooth bark.

Leaves are alternate, chartaceous, broadly lanceolate, entire on the margin and acute at the apex.

Beneath of the leaf is glaucous, and the lateral nerves 10-13 pairs are ascendig.

White flowers in April to May open solitary before the leaves.

This species is common on the Japan Sea side.

The wood is used for utensils.

Distribution ; Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu
