A medium sized evergreen tree with grayish smooth bark.

Leaves are alternate, clustered near the end of shoots with rusty-tomentose petioles swollen at the base, mostly oblanceolate, coriaceous, abruptly acuminate, entire or with few coarse short-awned teeth.

Flowering in May to June. Fruits ripening purplish black in November

This tree is a common compound of the laurisilvae in southern Japan.

The wood is used for carrying poles, umbrella handles other implements, beds of shiitake.

Distribution ; Honshu ( Shizuoka west), Shikoku, Kyushu, Ryukyu, Formosa, China, Himalaya
