A deciduous large tree with dark purplish brown rather smooth bark.

Leaves are alternate, serrate with aristate teeth.

The petioles are glabrous, furnished with 2 prominent glands near the apex.

White flowers open in April with the pinkish leaves.

It grows in the cool or warm temperate zone, and old and large trees are found on the sunny places.

The wood is used for utensils, furnitures, instruments, engravings.

Distribution ; Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, South Korea
