Kaya
Torreya nucifera


A large evergreen tree with grayish brown bark.

Alternate leaves are rigid and pungent one feels sting when one touched. The surface of leaf is lustrous dark green while the undersurface is yellowish green with 2 yellowish white bands.

This species is scatteredly found in warm temperate forests.

The wood is used for utensils,checkerboads and bathtubs.
The albumen of seeds is fatty and edible.

The squeezed oil from seeds is used for substitute oil for olive oil.

Distribution ; Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Cheju Island
